How VA Non-Additive Disability Mathematics Operates
Understanding the statutory whole-person efficiency formula governing service-connected compensation.
Under Title 38 Code of Federal Regulations § 4.25, the Department of Veterans Affairs does not perform standard arithmetic addition on service-connected disability percentages. Instead, each disability rating is applied strictly against the veteran's remaining healthy whole-person efficiency.
Statutory Mathematical Formula (38 CFR § 4.25)
Where individual disabilities are sorted in descending order of severity before sequential multiplication.
The 70% Statutory Threshold and Individual Unemployability (TDIU)
Achieving a 70% combined disability rating represents a key legal milestone for transitioning veterans. Under 38 CFR § 4.16(a), a veteran with a single disability rated at 60% or a combined rating of 70% (with at least one condition rated at 40% or higher) becomes eligible to apply for Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU), which awards monthly compensation at the 100% statutory pay rate.
